Huntington

IT WAS AFTER 6 PM when Margaret and Tom checked into the Hotel Prichard on the corner of Sixth and Ninth Street in downtown Huntington. Moments after Tom pulled up in front of the 13-story red brick building, a bellman loaded their luggage onto a brass cart and wheeled it through the marble-floored lobby.

“Oh my,” Margaret whispered, “this is much fancier than I’d expected.”

Tom gave an almost imperceptible shrug and grinned. “The manager at the Daniel Boone recommended it.”

As she stood waiting for Tom to check them in, Margaret noticed him having a rather long discussion with the clerk behind the desk. She moved up behind him.

“That’s not what I asked for,” Tom said. “You’ll have to find something else.”

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“They assumed because we were traveling together, we wanted adjoining rooms.” Tom turned back to the clerk. “Surely you’ve got something else. The same floor maybe but not—”

Noticing the harried look on the clerk’s face, Margaret leaned toward Tom and whispered, “Adjoining rooms are fine with me, but if you’re concerned I’ll try to take advantage of you…”

Tom sputtered a laugh, then turned back to the clerk. “Since my traveling partner has promised to control herself, we’ll go ahead and take the adjoining rooms.”
